Sanders is a self-proclaimed socialist, which should tell you where he stands on most of the issues. One of his major campaign issues is income inequality in the US, which he sees as a major problem. He is pro-choice, believes in marijuana legalization, advocates civil rights legislation, and wants more regulations for Wall Street. He wants college tuition to be free and wants to invest in alternative energy. The environment is a top priority for Sanders. As for foreign policy, he thinks America should reach out to Syrian refugees. He says that health care should be a fundamental right for all citizens. When it comes to gun control, he calls for sensible regulations. As per his socialist leanings, he wants to implement a $15 an hour minimum wage.

Sanders’ progressive outlook resonates with many disenfranchised Americans. He has done a good job running a grassroots campaign. He is especially popular among liberal college students and young people. Socialism is a hard sell for most Americans. While many people like Bernie because of his willingness to be honest and open about his beliefs, he’s not moderate enough to win the election. His gruff demeanor might be a turn-off to more conservative voters. Also, his age could be a strike against him (he is 74). Most importantly, though, Democrats are overwhelmingly supporting the slightly more moderate Hillary Clinton.
Odds Bernie Sanders’ Will Win?
Although Sanders is very popular with a certain faction of voters, he is still somwhat unlikely to win the presidential nomination. Again, his biggest problem is one of perception. Most Americans simply are not going to vote for someone who identifies as a Socialist. However, the election is still pretty far away, and polls are not always the most reliable gauge of a candidate’s efficacy. It will be interesting to see if Sanders can gain a lead on Hillary Clinton. As of now, though, the top odds-makers put Bernie at +800 to win the Democratic nomination, and +1500 to win the presidency. In other words, a long shot.
