Chris Christie Presidential Betting Odds
Chris Christie was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1962. He studied political science at the University of Delaware. He got his law degree from Seton Hall University, and in 1987 was admitted to the New Jersey Bar. He became a lobbyist for the energy industry in 1998. For over six years, Christie worked as a prosecutor in the US Attorney General’s office. In 2009, he became governor of New Jersey.
Where Does Chris Christie Stand On The Issues?
Chris Christie is one of the more moderate candidates vying for the GOP nomination. He has been a long-time crusader against unions, particularly teachers’ unions. On social issues, he calls for defunding planned parenthood and banning abortions after 20 weeks. He wants to cut taxes and reduce spending. Although he does not believe that homosexuality is a sin, he is against gay marriage, even though it’s “the law of the land.” Christie supports medical marijuana and calls for treatment for addicts instead of jail time. He believes that climate change is real and manmade. His policies on the environment are relatively moderate. He opposes Medicaid expansion and does not believe in a single-payer system. He wants to raise the retirement age by two years. Christie has vowed to send grounds troops to fight ISIL if he becomes president.
Pros
Chris Christie proved himself to be able to work with both Democrats and Republicans as governor of New Jersey and was able to get legislation passed. When he was a US attorney for New Jersey, he investigated corrupt officials and won about 130 convictions. He is also much more experienced than many of his opponents.
Cons
Currently, Christie’s approval rating in New Jersey is a measly 30 percent. His anti-union positions as governor of a primarily working-class state may have damaged his reputation. Also, in 2013 Christie was involved in a scandal in which his appointees conspired with the Port Authority to cause a major traffic jam by closing several lanes on the George Washington Bridge as retaliation for Fort Lee mayor Mark Sokolich not endorsing Christie during his 2013 bid for re-election. Another strike against Christie is that he tends to be a bit of a loudmouth. His blustery demeanor can be off-putting.
Odds Chris Christie’ Will Win?
Chris Christie’s chances of securing the GOP nomination are looking slimmer every day and BettingElections.com is here to keep you up to date. His poll numbers are too low, and Bridgegate might be a scandal that is impossible to rebound from. One thing Christie has going for him is his ability to reach out to people. Sure, he can be brash and boorish to his critics, but to ordinary voters he has the ability to project a certain charm and charisma. That being the case, he will still have to work on his poll numbers if he wants to be in the game. His current odds are +1600 to win the GOP nomination, and +3300 to actually become president. In other words, his odds are not great.
