Donald Trump Presidential Betting Odds
Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York. His father was a real estate developer who owned middle-class apartments. At age 13, Donald was sent to military school. In 1968, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics. Just after college, he joined his father’s company, and was given control of it in 1971. He then became involved in some major building projects. He bought some Atlantic City casinos in the ‘80s. In 1990, the market collapsed, and his net worth fell from $1.7 billion to $500 million. He had to take a bunch of loans to bail himself out, but bounced back in due time. By 1997, he was worth $2 billion. He became the star of the reality television series, The Apprentice in 2004. His current net worth is around $4 billion.
Where Does Donald Trump Stand On The Issues?
It’s hard to say exactly, because he’s changed positions so often. In 2000, he said he was pro-choice, but then a year later he said he was pro-life. Most recently, the issues he has been focusing on are rebuilding the economy (which includes not raising the minimum wage and restricting free trade) and immigration. He wants to deport all illegal immigrants and ban Muslims from entering the country. He is against gun control, Obamacare, and the EPA. He is pro-military, but was against the Iraq invasion. He wants to cut funding for the EPA and the Dept. of Education. He supports the use of medical marijuana and is okay with affirmative action. He says that black lives matter, but that we need more police.
Pros
Trump’s media presence is the best thing he’s got going for him at the moment. He has been able to cleverly use his celebrity status to get his message across. Also, his brashness and willingness to speak his mind is appealing to many voters. He certainly has some passionate supporters, that’s for sure. Also, the fact that he’s a multibillionaire doesn’t hurt. Trump is obviously a man who enjoys being in the spotlight, and he has used it to his advantage. His confidence and ability to influence others are measures of strength and leadership in many people's’ eyes.
Cons
Trump has many factors working against him. First, he has no experience in politics whatsoever. While this is one of the primary reasons why people like him so much, his lack of understanding of key issues is obvious when you watch him in the debates. Second, he changes positions too often. Besides the abortion comments, in Aug. 2015, he said that Planned Parenthood is important, but just a month later he said it should be defunded. First, he said climate change was a hoax, then he said some climate change might be manmade. These are just a few examples of his indecisive views. The biggest factor working against him is his loose mouth. His comments insulting POW John McCain, trashing Muslims and immigrants, women, etc. are just in poor taste, regardless of party affiliation.
Odds Donald Trump’ Will Win?
While it may seem that Donald Trump has a good chance of becoming president because of his overall popularity with disaffected Republican voters, the odds paint a different picture. Betting on elections is something of a science and part of that is understanding the way these races turn in the general. Although he may be leading in the polls, it’s still early. Eventually Trump is going to have to go toe-to-toe in debates with some real politicians. Also, Trump needs to be careful not to alienate key demographics, namely minorities and women. In the end, Trump will need to prove that he is candidate of substance, not simply reality-TV fodder. His current odds to win the GOP nomination are +250 versus Marco Rubio’s +140. His odds of winning the presidency are lower, of course, at +650.
