Where Does John Kasich Stand On The Issues?
John Kasich is probably one of the most middling conservatives on the ballot. He does believe in climate change, and that man has his hand in creating it. However, he has stated that states and private companies should regulate it, not the EPA. He believes non-violent offenders should get reduced sentences, and that more resources should be allocated to rehabilitation services. As far as education goes, he wants to push for major reforms, including introducing occupational training as early as elementary school. He has strayed away from speaking about immigration that much, but has stated that he would allow undocumented immigrants to stay in the country legally. He wants to keep the federal Medicaid expansion, but get rid of the rest of the Affordable Care Act. He also wants to cut taxes, ban abortions after 20 weeks, and keep the U.S. fighting against ISIS.
Pros
The biggest plus that Kasich has at the moment is his involvement with the 1997 Balanced Budget Act. He happened to join the race rather late, when most of the conservatives in the country were focused on bigger-named candidates. His run as Governor of Ohio has benefited him in that he has more political history than some other Rep. Candidates (Trump, Rubio). While the nomination is a long shot, there is a much higher chance of seeing Rubio as POTUS, and Kasich as VP. Both share ideological centers, and both will bring some new ideas to the conservative mindset.
Cons
Kasich’s main hurdle seems to be visibility. He is simply too quiet for his own good, and joining the race so late cost him a lot of campaigning hours. His moderate philosophy doesn’t appeal to the Tea Party or the old-guard conservatives. And while his political experience is substantial, it doesn’t seem to be helping his chances. It is actually rather hard to find definitive information about him on the internet, further proving is absence on most voters radars.
