Ted Cruz Presidential Betting Odds
Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 in Calgary, Canada. His father came to the United States from Cuba in the late 1950s. He grew up in Houston, Texas and became interested in politics. Cruz got his law degree from Princeton University, after which he graduated from Harvard law school. In 2000, he became an advisor for George W. Bush’s campaign. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2012, and helped organized a government shutdown in response to Obamacare. Cruz chose to announce his plans to run for president at Liberty University, the Christian college founded by Jerry Falwell.
Where Does Ted Cruz Stand On The Issues?
Ted Cruz is one of the most staunchly conservative Republicans currently seeking office. He particularly appeals to religious and evangelical voters. He is against gay marriage, abortion, gun control, and Obamacare. He wants to defund Planned Parenthood and voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. He also voted against raising the minimum wage and wants to raise the retirement age. He wants to get tough on immigration (even though his father is an immigrant). His plan calls for more border security. As far as economic issues go, he wants to abolish the IRS and have a flat tax. He concedes that global warming is real, but questions whether humans are causing it. Cruz wants to de-regulate corporations and de-fund the EPA. He voted no on protecting ocean, coastal, and great lakes ecosystems. He supports capital punishment.
Pros
Ted Cruz has plenty of support among evangelical Christians due to his strong stances against abortion and gay marriage. His alignment with the Tea Party could win him some major support in traditionally red states. Unlike some of the more popular GOP candidates, Cruz has some political experience, having been a member of the Senate since 2012. He has done a good job of branding himself as the most religious of the Republican candidates, which strikes a chord with many evangelicals.
Cons
Cruz will need to try to appeal to a wider base of voters if he wants to cinch the GOP nomination. Even some Republicans have criticized his fringe views. John McCain famously described Cruz as a “wacko bird,” claiming that his views do not reflect the majority opinion of most Republicans. Also, his place of birth could end up being an issue. He was born in Canada. His anti-immigration views raise a lot of questions when you consider that his father came to the United States from Cuba in the late 1950s.
Odds Ted Cruz’ Will Win?
Betting on elections can be tricky to pin down when a candidates odds are at thier best, Cruz’s odds are not the worst by any stretch, but they aren’t great either. While he may be able to garner some support in Southern states where religion is highly valued, he will have trouble converting independent voters and winning electoral votes in swing states. Although he does have political experience, having been a senator since 2012, many GOP voters are fed up with the establishment and are going out on a limb for outsiders like Donald Trump and Ben Carson. He is going to have a tough time garnering any support from women and African-Americans, two key demographics that Cruz has largely ignored. His current odds to become the GOP nominee are +400, just behind Marco Rubio and Donald Trump. The odds of Cruz becoming the next president are slimmer still, at +1000.
